Best direct mail service: five options compared

For a small business with its own address list, a self-serve tool such as Thanks.io fits: $0 a month on Pay as you go, or $49 a month on Business with a 4x6 postcard at $0.77 at Standard Mail, as read on October 24, 2026. A local printer with USPS Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) fits a business with no list, and PostcardMania quotes postage, list and design on top of printing.

Direct mail service providers fall into three kinds: self-serve tools, print shops and full-service teams. Direct mail cost per piece breaks a piece into plan fee, rate, class and postage.

PostcardMania's rates are print only and the printer's EDDM row shows postage only. The Thanks.io and Click2Mail rows include postage.

Self-serve tools: you hold the list

Thanks.io fits mail that follows an event or a list that changes. Pay as you go has no monthly fee and no minimum, and a 4x6 postcard is $1.18; Pay as you go mails First Class, per its help center. Business adds campaigns, QR tracking, address verification, suppression lists and Zapier, Make and Integrately connections. On 4x6 postcards at First Class, Business costs less than Pay as you go from about 137 pieces a month, and Pay as you go costs less below that.

A new Business account defaults to First Class until Standard Mail Mode is switched on. Professional is $199 a month with a dedicated success manager, and it costs less than Business on 4x6 postcards only from about 1,154 pieces a month. Best direct mail automation software compares seven tools.

Per-job printing and mailing: Click2Mail

Click2Mail has no plan and no pricing page; each product page has a cost estimator. At its default settings for a 4.25 x 6 inch postcard at First Class, one piece is $2.491 because production has a $2.00 minimum charge, 500 pieces are $0.780 each, $0.495 of it postage, and 5,000 are $0.709 each. The minimum is waived for buyers of account credit, and Click2Mail says it has no setup fees.

USPS EDDM through a local printer

EDDM Retail sends a piece to every address on the routes you choose. USPS Notice 123, effective October 4, 2026, lists EDDM Retail flats up to 3.3 ounces at $0.26 a piece in postage. A mailing is at least 200 and up to 5,000 pieces per day per ZIP Code, needs no special permit and is dropped off at the Post Office. Printing is the printer's quote.

EDDM Retail pieces are flats, so a 6x11 inch card qualifies and a 4x6 card does not, and DMM 143 says personal information may not be included. Thanks.io does not offer EDDM. EDDM vs direct mail has the steps.

Full service and design help

Thanks.io Professional includes design and messaging services. PostcardMania prints a 4.25 x 6 postcard at $0.12 at low volume and $0.06 at high volume, and its page does not define either. Those rates are print only: it asks for a custom quote so postage, list, design and campaign services are counted. None of the print or agency pages cited here publishes an all-in price with postage, list and design included.
