Direct mail cost per piece: the plan fee, postage and volume counted

Last reviewed October 24, 2026

Quick answerA piece costs its rate, plus any First Class charge, plus the plan fee spread over the month's pieces. On $0 plans, a printed 4x6 at First Class is $0.902 on PostGrid and $1.081 on Postalytics, postage included.

Direct mail cost per piece: the formula

Direct mail cost per piece is the per-piece rate for your plan and mail piece, plus the First Class charge if used, plus any extras, plus the monthly plan fee divided by the month's pieces. No single average fits every mailing, because each vendor prices its pieces on its own terms.

On plans with no monthly fee, PostGrid lists a printed 4x6 postcard at $0.902 and Postalytics lists one at $1.081, both at First Class with postage in the rate. Thanks.io lists a 4x6 postcard with a digitally rendered script message at $1.18 on Pay as you go, which its help center says mails First Class. Handwrytten's Pro plan is $449 a month on Pay Monthly plus $1.99 a handwritten card, with postage billed on top at the current USPS rate.

The rest of this guide works the formula through Thanks.io, whose pricing page has a plan calculator that totals each plan. Its help center names three things that set the rate: the mailer type, the postage class and the plan tier. Its rate covers printing, digitally rendered handwriting, the mail piece and US postage. Pay as you go is its plan with no monthly fee, so its cost per piece is the rate plus any extras.

What 100 postcards cost on each Thanks.io plan

As read on October 24, 2026, Thanks.io's plan calculator totals 100 4x6 postcards like this.

100 4x6 postcards in one month, per the Thanks.io plan calculator on its Standard Mail setting
PlanMonthly feeMail cost for 100Calculator total
Pay as you go$0$118.00$118.00
Business$49$77.00 at Standard Mail$126.00
Professional$199$64.00 at Standard Mail$263.00

Standard Mail, also called Marketing Mail, is the lower-priced, slower USPS class, and these totals include the monthly fee. The calculator prices Pay as you go at Standard Mail, but Thanks.io's help center says every Pay as you go piece mails First Class, so check the final price on the order screen.

At the listed 4x6 rates, Business costs less than Pay as you go from about 120 pieces a month, and from about 137 with First Class on both sides. Professional costs less than Business only from about 1,154.

A Shopify store sending a post-purchase postcard to each first-time buyer, about 400 a month, is above 137 pieces and below 1,154, so Business is the lowest of the three at the listed rates.

What postage covers and what is extra

On Thanks.io, US postage is inside the per-piece rate and nothing is added at checkout. Extras are Print Protect, an optional coating, at $0.15 a card; $0.20 per extra letter page; and a gift card's face value.

The rate does not change with batch size. At 1,000 4x6 postcards a month the rate is still $1.18 on Pay as you go, $0.77 on Business and $0.64 on Professional at Standard Mail, plus the plan fee. Thanks.io's home page offers custom pricing at 1,000 or more pieces a month, so ask for a quote at that volume.

Thanks.io's $1.18 is a First Class piece per its help center and carries a digitally rendered message; Postalytics and PostGrid print their cards. Every Door Direct Mail (EDDM) Retail postage is $0.26 a piece for flats up to 3.3 ounces (USPS Notice 123, effective October 4, 2026), plus printing quoted by the printer. It is postage alone, so it does not compare with an all-in rate.

Check the price before you send

Thanks.io shows a cost breakdown on the Review step before you order, and a Pay as you go account sees the Pay as you go and Business price for the same order. On Thanks.io Business, $49 a month, a 4x6 postcard is $0.77 at Standard Mail with US postage in the rate. Thanks.io pricing lists every plan, product and mail class.

Pay as you go carries no plan fee, which suits sends below about 120 to 137 4x6 postcards a month. A business dropping 200 or more identical pieces on whole routes needs no mail service, because EDDM Retail is entered at the Post Office, with or without a printer. Above about 137 pieces a month, or when Zapier, webhooks or QR tracking are needed, read the Thanks.io Business plan guide.

Postalytics and PostGrid list lower rates for a printed 4x6 postcard at First Class on a $0 plan. The best direct mail service guide sets the options in one table.
