How to send handwritten notes to customers in Shopify, by hand or automatically

Last reviewed October 24, 2026

Quick answerWrite the notes by hand from the Shopify order list, or connect the store to a mail service so each order triggers one. Thanks.io links Shopify through Zapier or Make, which need its Business plan.

How to send handwritten notes to Shopify customers: two routes

To send handwritten notes to Shopify customers, either write them yourself from the Shopify Orders page or connect the store to a mail service so each new order triggers one. Automated handwritten thank-you cards follow one pattern: a store event fires, a Zap (a Zapier automation) or a Make scenario runs, and the service prints and mails the note. Zapier and Make link apps without code.

Route 1: write them by hand from the order list

Open Orders in the Shopify admin and filter the list by fulfillment status, payment status, date range or tag to find the orders that deserve a note. Shopify can also export orders as a CSV file with shipping name and address columns. The file includes an Accepts Marketing column, Shopify's field for customer marketing consent.

This route costs your own time: at about 400 first-time buyers a month, that is about 400 notes to write, address and stamp. Thanks.io's CSV upload accepts any column names, so an export can be mapped into a one-time mailing, though neither Thanks.io nor Shopify documents that as a route. This is not legal advice.

Route 2: connect Shopify to a mail service

Thanks.io connects Shopify, WooCommerce, BigCommerce and Magento through Zapier or Make, which its pricing table puts on Business and Professional, as read on October 24, 2026. Its handwriting is digitally rendered script; its help center says it uses no real pens or human handwriters. Its Shopify help page gives these steps for Zapier:

  1. Search zapier.com for the Thanks.io Shopify templates, or start from scratch.
  2. Choose the Shopify New Order trigger and add a Filter step, such as first purchases only.
  3. Add a Thanks.io Send action and authorize Thanks.io in Zapier.
  4. Map the Shopify shipping address, not the billing address, to the recipient fields.
  5. Choose the design: an image template and a message template.
  6. Test, then activate.

For Make, use the Shopify Watch Orders module with a Thanks.io HTTP request action. Each Zap run sends to a single recipient.

Zapier orders sent in API Testing Mode are canceled, so nothing is printed or charged while you test. A live automation mails real notes and charges your account for each one, and Thanks.io's terms make you responsible for the mailings it generates. Before connecting a store, Pay as you go at $0 a month lets you mail one note to your own address first.

When to send: thank-you, review and win-back timing

Thanks.io's post-purchase page suggests a thank-you within 24 hours of purchase, a review request 7 to 10 days after delivery and a win-back 60 to 90 days after the last purchase. These are Thanks.io's suggestions, not results. In Zapier, a Delay step sets the gap for a win-back.

Cost per note and the Cart Mailer option

On Thanks.io Business, a notecard is $1.83 at Standard Mail with US postage in the rate, and First Class adds $0.21. Thanks.io advises First Class for notecards for predictable timing.

A notecard costs more than a postcard, and Handwritten postcards vs printed postcards sets the two side by side.

Thanks.io's pricing page says there are no setup fees on its plans. Cart Mailer, a separate Thanks.io product, has its own fees: $500 to set up and $200 a month, with postcard pricing by volume.

A store that wants a note for a few customers needs no connector. A store that wants one for every first-time buyer needs Route 2: Thanks.io Business, $49 a month, connects Shopify through Zapier or Make and mails a notecard for $1.83 at Standard Mail with postage included. The best handwritten note service for business guide lists other services, and the Thanks.io Business plan guide has the plan.
