USPS Marketing Mail vs First Class: the short answer
USPS Marketing Mail costs less and arrives later than First-Class Mail, and USPS prices it for mailings of at least 200 pieces or 50 pounds. Standard Mail is Thanks.io's name for the Marketing Mail stream. On Thanks.io, Standard Mail takes about 10 to 20 business days with no USPS tracking and no return of undeliverable pieces. First Class takes about 5 to 10 business days and returns bad addresses to you.

Try Thanks.io →USPS rules for Marketing Mail and presorted First Class
As read on October 24, 2026, the USPS Domestic Mail Manual (DMM) 243 says each Marketing Mail mailing must contain at least 200 pieces or 50 pounds. Presorted First-Class Mail needs a single mailing of at least 500 pieces (DMM 233). Both carry an annual mailing fee, paid once each 12-month period at each office of mailing.
Presort prices also require a Move Update, which checks addresses against change-of-address records within 95 days before mailing (DMM 602). USPS sets no delivery time for Marketing Mail, which may receive deferred handling.
DMM 243 also limits personal information and handwritten or typewritten matter in Marketing Mail, and DMM 233 says matter marked "Postcard" goes as First-Class Mail, Priority Mail or Priority Mail Express. PostGrid adds that its Standard class must be marketing in nature. Thanks.io's pages do not say how these standards apply to its Standard Mail pieces, so ask Thanks.io and USPS about your own piece. First Class adds $0.21 on 6x11 postcards and every other product. International pieces use the equivalent of First Class. The vendors give different estimates, Thanks.io 5 to 10 business days for First Class and 10 to 20 for Standard, Postalytics 5 to 7 and about 14 to 21, Handwrytten 2 to 7 and Simply Noted 3 to 7, and none guarantees a date, so time a test batch.
How a mail service sends Standard Mail in small batches
Below the USPS 200-piece minimum, a mail service is one way to the lower class. Thanks.io's Business plan, $49 a month, sends a 4x6 postcard by Standard Mail at $0.77 with no minimum order, and its rate is the same for one piece or a million. The Thanks.io Business plan guide lists the rest of the plan.
A new account defaults to First Class until Standard Mail Mode is switched on in Mail Preferences, though Standard can be picked on each send at the Review step, where each option shows its price and a delivery estimate. On Pay as you go, which costs $0 a month, every piece goes First Class, per Thanks.io's help center.
When First Class is worth the extra
Thanks.io's help center says to choose First Class when timing matters, as with event invitations, time-sensitive offers and birthday mail, or when you want undeliverable pieces returned to clean your list. First Class also gives piece-level USPS tracking. It adds $0.05 on 4x6 and 6x9 postcards.
The same help center says to choose Standard when cost per piece is the priority at high volume and exact timing does not matter, as with evergreen promotions and drip campaigns.
A mailing of 200 or more pieces meets the USPS minimum on its own. A sender below that, or one mailing from an event trigger, needs a service to reach the lower class. Start with how to mail postcards for business, and see EDDM vs direct mail for whole-route drops.
